This city landmark, which used to be the residence of the Kings of Thailand, should be the first place on any visitor's itinerary. The Palace, built in 1782 by King Rama I, consists of several buildings with highly decorated architectural details. The Palace is now used for royal ceremonies and state functions. The Royal Chapel of Wat Phra Kaew, in the same compound, houses the Emerald Buddha, the most sacred Buddha image in Thailand. A small image of green stone, 75cm high, the Emerald Buddha has come down the Thai history as the principal Buddha image of the nation. The Temple of the Emerald Buddha is world-renown for its multi-chrome, gilded pavilions, stupas with glittering spires and fanciful mythical figures. Among the attractions inside the temple are classical mural paintings along the inner walls done by the Thai master painters depicting the whole Ramayana epic. Visitors should also see the complete replica of the Khmer Angkor Wat done in sandstone. (* Note: Proper attire is required on this trip – no shorts, no slippers and shoes have to be removed before entering the buildings of the Grand Palace and Temple.) The tour starts early in the morning with a 1.5hrs drive along the southern highway passing through the major salt production area of the country (80km from Bangkok on the southern route). Here is the venue of the world famous floating market of Thailand. From dawn till mid-morning, a multitude of farmwives paddle in with fruits, vegetables, and other products for bartering or selling until the main canal is choked full of sampans carrying every edible plant imaginable. En route, visit coconut plantation and to see how coconut sugar is being made. Visitors will enjoy a boat trip with very unique scenery along both sides of the canal. All kinds of food, vegetable and fruits are available.
(08:00 – 17:30 hrs - $70.00) Ayuthaya was the capital from 1350 to 1767, when it fell to the invading Burmese army. Fifteen years later, the new capital of Bangkok was built with Ayuthaya as a model. The museum houses collections of various artefacts, gathered from the ruins around the old capital. Visit Wat Mongkhol Bopit, which houses the largest bronze Buddha image in Thailand. The image was partially destroyed during the sacking of Ayuthaya, and was recently restored and venerated as the symbol of the unconquerable fighting spirit of the Thais. Also visit the ancient city of Ayuthaya and Bang-Pa-In Summer Palace. The summer palace was built in the reign of King Rama IV. A clutter of buildings, in Thai, Italian, Victorian and Chinese architectural styles stand around a palatial pond. The palace was a favourite summer resort of King Rama V.
